Yoga & Martial Arts Cross Training

Cross training is an ideal approach for expanding and fine-tuning performance in any given sport or physical activity. Yoga is one of the most popular activities for athletes who are cross training as it provides a variety of benefits, both physical and mental. Yoga promotes mental awareness and focus, but it can also increase core strength, flexibility and balance.

When training BJJ, or any martial art for that matter, cross training with yoga can provide some great results -

  • Flexibility – Increased flexibility can improve comfort levels when practicing and applying submissions; this also will help you learn techniques faster when grappling. In terms of striking, flexibility undoubtedly increases range of motion : for example, high kicks will become much easier and more powerful.


  • Creativity – Learning new poses, stances and even mental perspectives from practicing yoga will demonstrably increase your creative output while training.


  • Patience & Relaxation – Without a doubt, pursuing yoga with an open-mind and dedicating yourself to regular sessions has clear effects on mental stability. Learning these concepts over time enhances personal patience and creates a feeling of general mental/physical relaxation after classes ; this is an ideal state to be in before practicing martial arts.


  • Improved Core Strength – Having a secure frame and being able to hold intense positions for long periods of time can be very important when it comes to grappling, wrestling or other martial arts. There are a wide variety of yoga stances which can be used to increase the core ; try some of these exercises for yourself and immediately you should start to feel results.
