Pregnancy is a wonderful experience. It is a time for a woman to prepare her body and mind to become a mother; the body undergoes many changes that can be experienced by women in different ways and these are not always pleasant. A woman is never really sure of what to expect from pregnancy and even from labour due to stories from friends, or advice from other women who all have had different experiences.
My personal experiences regarding pregnancy were very different from each other. My first pregnancy was very easy; I had barely any nausea throughout my pregnancy. I was able to stay active throughout the pregnancy, and the only discomfort I felt was from over eating and found myself crying for no reason at times. I worked all the way up to my delivery and was actually scheduled to work the night after I gave birth, but obviously could not make it for that shift. My second pregnancy was a completely different story. I started bleeding quite early on in the pregnancy and ended up having a low lying placenta and subchorionic hemorrhages. I was advised to stay in bed and rest with my feet up; during this time I had a lot of pain in my lower back and had to see a chiropractor. I had to take time off of work and eventually leave work early on disability leave. I developed gestational diabetes and was insulin dependent for a few months and had to be induced. This example of contrast just goes to show that even with the same parents, pregnancies can be so different. There’s no mathematical equation to tell you what kind of pregnancy you are going to have or how you are going to deal with it. Pregnancy is unpredictable and the only guarantee is that you will worry which is part of the prep work for becoming a parent. You will have worries about everything you could possibly worry about and the fact is, you are growing a tiny human inside of your body and you can’t see or control what is happening in there. Some of the only things that you can control are how you take care of yourself, and how you monitor your baby via regular prenatal medical care. So aside from visiting your medical professional regularly, the best thing you can do for your baby is to take care of yourself. Prenatal yoga is a great way to de stress from all of the things that are going on around you and really focus on you and your baby. It is a great way to bond with your baby and to really get in tuned to the changes that are happening to your body. In prenatal yoga we practice letting go of the things that no longer serve us like expectations of ourselves and how things should be. We explore our inner selves – our reactions, responses and emotions and work on being present and accepting of what is in the moment. We practice deep relaxation, breathing techniques, and asanas to keep our pelvic floor strong. Although pregnancy is unpredictable, the way you respond is your choice. Pregnancy can be a very pleasant experience for you and your partner if you learn to tap into those emotions and find ways to experience what is going in a positive way.
