New Years Resolution
This is a common sentiment around this time of year - however there is much more to this statement. Most of us who specify a New Years resolution either give up, or do not meet the lofty goals that they apply for themselves. With that being said, setting realistic goals and keeping your commitment comes with a large payoff, both physically and emotionally.
1. REALISTIC GOALS
Typically speaking, making unrealistic or vague goals will end up in failure. We respond well to specific sets of goals, especially those which are obtainable. Make sure you set realistic goals and keep track of the steps on a weekly basis to make sure you are hitting your targets.
Positive thinking and persistence are key to meeting your New Years resolutions. Do not dwell in negativity, or give up because you have not met your goals within the desired amount of time. As long as you keep up with trying to meet your resolution, you will eventually see success (as long as these goals are realistic of course).
Get your friends and family involved. Whether they are aiming for the same goals, support from these people will likely improve your chances of success. Do not be overwhelmed by the expectations of your peers after they know about your goals, but certainly keep them informed of your progress. Using support from friends and family can have a big impact on your goals because we like to share our success stories and seek assurance when goals are not immediately met.
4. WHY ARE YOU SETTING THESE GOALS?
Set your goals according to your own wishes, and not based off the ambitions or successes of others. Make sure you have a clear idea of why you want to improve before you start taking action. Having a ‘battle plan’, is a key component to success, not borrowing ambitions from somebody else. Make sure you know what you want as an individual first and foremost.
5. LEARN AND APPLY THE BENEFITS OF MARTIAL ARTS
Practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai have obvious benefits to your New Years resolutions. Focus, Discipline, Perseverance are common themes in our martial arts programs and these can be applied to any goals that you may have set for yourself. Whether for your own goals, or those of your children, martial arts has benefits towards motivation, mental clarity and confidence (which is a key component of striving for success).

Benefits of martial arts training in preventing assault.
According to global statistics, one in three women have experienced some type of violence, be it physical or sexual – this may not include verbal harassment and assault which can be threatening in its own right. These numbers are staggering, and we believe that martial arts training can be of great value as a result. We aim to provide as many defensive resources as possible if such a situation would ever occur. There are studies available which indicate women’s self defense programs and martial arts training decreases chances of experiencing assault.
Confidence in your abilities.
Collectively, we want to live in a society where violence against women in any form is simply not tolerated. That being said, we still have a long way to go. In the majority of cases, abusive attacks towards women are made by men who are may be larger in stature and who believe they have an advantage in strength. With experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, women can often negate any sort of size advantage, and this confidence will help to defend any sort of attack. Being confident in the ability to resist and fight back is a huge deterrent and may prevent any sort of potential altercation in the first place. With the proper instructors and regular training, building both physical and mental confidence can be achieved.
Not everybody will be the victim of an attack.
Not all women will experience an attack in their lifetime, and we wish to keep it that way. In many cases, a potential assault may not take a violent turn. However, having confidence to prevent any sort of threatening situation is extremely healthy for the mind, and has obvious physical benefits otherwise.
